The qualifications for both offices in the body of Christ, elder and deacon, are biblical, not educational, not professional, not civic. The qualifications for an elected public servant, or a board member, or a non-profit CEO, are immaterial. The qualifications for the elder in Christ’s church are found in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9. The qualifications for the deacon in Chris’s church are found in 1 Timothy 3:8-13. Despite the variety of ways these character features can be expressed and understood, as you can see below, they are nonetheless clearly taught in Scripture. Contrary to our personal intuition, Scripture is more explicit about an officer’s character than his function, his holiness far more than his skill. Such is Christ’s church.
The following is a straightforward analysis of the words Scripture used to describe the biblical qualifications for officers in Christ’s church. This is not intended to be scholarly or even particularly insightful. Rather, this is an example of close observation, guided by Pastor John. Before making a nomination, reflect on Scripture’s description of the elder and the deacon.
Perhaps it seems that no human qualifies, apart from Jesus Himself. The nominee, along with our current elders and deacons, make this a central feature of discussion, cultivating humility. Notice this in the nomination process.
